Shimano MW700 Gore-Tex SPD Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Pinkbike.com, on 03/01/2018

    5

Shimanos MW7 shoes are aimed at riders who constantly find themselves battling foul weather, those hearty individuals who dont shy away from heading out for a ride in monsoon-like conditions.

To help keep the elements at bay the SPD-compatible MW7 uses a waterproof, insulated Gore-Tex liner in conjunction with a neoprene cuff that extends above the ankle. A drawstring-style speed lacing mechanism makes adjusting the fit a quick and easy process, and a velcro strap at the front of the ankle ensures that theres no unwanted heel lift. The entire lacing system is covered with a water resistant flap that fastens with velcro around the perimeter of the laces and around the neoprene cuff.

The MW7s midsole uses Shimanos Torbal technology, which gives the shoe the ability to flex slightly around the heel while still retaining stiffness at the front of the foot. The thinking behind this design is that the flex creates a more comfortable, natural feel underfoot, especially during cornering and descending.

Winters where I live typically involve copious amount of rain, the occasional snowstorm, and temperatures that fluctuate between just below freezing up to 50°F (10° C). In the past, Ive toughed out plenty of wet rides by simply wearing thicker socks and dealing with the inevitable shoe and foot sogginess, but after spending the last few months wearing the MW7 shoes Im not sure Ill be able to return to my old approach. Theres just something about finishing a ride with dry and warm feet thats hard to give up.

Even on the wettest rides imaginable, days where the puddles were axle deep and the rain refused to let up, Id return home with my feet completely dry, other than a ring of dampness around the top of my ankles where water soaked through the neoprene cuff. Thats what the cuff is there for – to prevent water from making its way all the way into the shoe, and it did just that. As far as the fit goes, the MW7 shoes run true to size, but riders who are planning on venturing out into below-freezing temperatures will probably want to go up a size in order to leave room for thicker socks. My feet stayed warm in temperatures down to around 32° F (0° C), and didnt feel excessively warm as long as temperatures remained below 50° F (10° C), although if you regularly ride in Arctic conditions something with more insulation than the MW7 may be a better bet.

For riders in search of a shoe to keep their feet warm and dry during wet, sloppy rides in cooler temperatures, Shimanos MW7 is an ideal choice. Comfortable and waterproof without being overly heavy or bulky, the MW7 can help make those rainy rides much more enjoyable. - Mike Kazimer

Shimano MW700 Gore-Tex SPD Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Road.cc, on 03/01/2018

With decent levels of waterproofing and insulation, Shimanos MW7 shoes are a good choice for winter riding, and you can walk easily in them too. I finished long rides on cold days in the MW7s with comfortable feet, including my first 100km ride of the year on a day the temperature never got above 1°C. I had chilly toes at the lunch stop, but once theyd thawed they were fine for all of the second half.

They didnt do as good a job of fending off the wet as of keeping my feet warm, but Im willing to live with that in winter shoes; Im fortunate enough to live in one of the least rainy parts of the country. My socks were wetter after a two-hour ride in the rain than after a dry ride in similar temperature, but the chill was tolerable. I escaped that feeling of cold needles in the toes and subsequent agonising warm-up. Happy with that.

That the MW7s perform similarly to the Northwave Extreme Winters is not surprising, as they use a similar insulated Gore lining. Gore calls this one Insulated Comfort but it seems very similar to the Sierra lining in the Northwaves. The liner sits under a synthetic leather and plastic outer that repels water well. It closes with a combination of Velcro and speed laces, so you just pull the laces snug and cover them with the flap.

The MW7s are nominally mountain bike shoes, in that they have a recessed, two-bolt cleat mounting. But the tread is quite light, which makes them more suitable for pavement and grass than deep trail mud. That makes them perfect commuting shoes for anyone who keeps going right through the winter. Theyre definitely much easier to walk in than winter shoes with external cleats. Having used both MW7s and Northwave Extremes Im leaning to the conclusion that SPD shoes are a better idea for winter riding. There were a couple of spots on my 100km ride where I had to get off and walk to get past short sections of ice. Even when its just a few steps Id much rather do that in SPD shoes.

And dont think mountain bike shoes like the MW7s are flexible and inefficient. Pedalling in the MW7s is plenty comfortable thanks to the stiff sole and well-shaped insole. Fleece insulation on the insole helps keep your feet warm too. Sure, theyre not carbon-road-race-shoe stiff, but youre not going to be racing in them anyway. What you are going to be doing is riding in all weathers and conditions, and the MW7s are spot-on for that.
