Sizes seem to differ in every store you visit and online shopping, as fun as it is, doesn’t have the same precision as buying something in person. Finding the right size for you is important! Whether you like a tight fit or something baggier, feeling comfortable in what you wear, both physically and emotionally, is a non-negotiable when it comes to clothing. We want you to remember that the clothes are meant to fit your body and needs, not the other way around. When it comes to picking our protective gear especially, choose the size that will fit you comfortably, even if the size is different than what you usually buy, keeping yourself safe and protected while out on your bike is infinitely more important than the number on the tag.

Helmets

Protecting your head while cycling is absolutely no joke. Whether you’re on a mountain bike or just cycling through the city, wearing a helmet is a necessity, and the better the fit, the safer you’ll be. If you’re new to the game, or looking for some advice on getting a helmet, you can always speak to an expert at your local Leisure Lakes Bikes Store! Otherwise, the Fox Racing Helmet size guide below will do the job too.

If you’ve never had to measure your head before, here’s a quick rundown:
  1. Grab a flexible tape measure, or a string and a ruler if that’s all you have
  2. Wrap the tape measure/string around your head; about 2.5cm (1 inch) above your eyebrows, at the widest part of your head (having a mirror or a friend might help)
  3. Take the tape measure off and take note of the circumference of your head, or measure the string against a ruler
  4. And you’re done! Use that measurement against any helmet sizing guide to get your size

Guards and warmers

Like Helmets, guards are basically a non-negotiable if you’re out mountain biking. Falls and scrapes are unavoidable on rough terrain. If you don’t fall, the plants around you will get you anyway, so there’s no reason not to get some protection on.

As mentioned previously, MTB guards are most effective when they’re snug against your skin. We don’t want you to be cutting any circulation off, or for them to be shifting around while you’re focussed on riding. Measure up good, and follow the guide to keep yourself safe.

For these sizes, measure your thigh around 7.5cm (just under 3 inches) above your knee, and measure your calf at the fullest part.
