Ahead of the 117th edition of the Paris–Roubaix race, Specialized have announced the latest iteration of their endurance race bike, the Roubaix. Cutting-edge in design, Specialized claim this is a bike that is Lighter than a Venge, Faster than a Tarmac, and with all the comfort and control that the Roubaix range has become synonymous with.

Here’s a deeper look into what’s changed for the 2020 Specialized Roubaix line-up, including a run down on the all-new Future Shock 2.0 head-tube suspension system.

By sourcing cutting-edge technology, Specialized have engineered a bike that’s lighter than the Venge, and more aero than the Tarmac. It’s their most technically advanced machine ever made.

With 6 wins at Paris – Roubaix, the Specialized Roubaix is a concept that’s spiralled into a complete obsession for designing the fastest machine on the cobbles, with each iteration bringing more speed, control, and capability. And the new Roubaix is their fastest and most capable yet, for everything from the Hell of The North to your hometown favourites.

Bringing more speed, more control and more safety – The all-new Future Shock 2.0 delivers 20mm of axial compliance via a hydraulic damper that suspends you, not the bike.

Future Shock as a concept is all about isolating you from any road harshness without compromising on the ride. Sitting above the frame, it provides a compliant ride that is still quick to handle and efficient over any road condition.

This new system uses an oil port to simultaneously control the compression and rebound damping, while an easy-to-access dial above the stem enables you to make on-the-fly damping adjustments.

Future Shock 2.0 is installed on the following 2020 Roubaix models; Expert, Pro & S-Works. All other 2020 models have been fitted with the new Future Shock 1.5 system.

With 20mm of rough-road-taming travel, the Future Shock 1.5 not only delivers a smoother, more comfortable ride, but it also reduces fatigue and increases speed over harsh terrain. The new Smooth boot, meanwhile, enhances the aesthetics to bring a clean transition from the head tube to the stem.

The new Pavé seatpost is the first compliant seatpost that’s aerodynamic. Starting with the same D-shape design found on the Tarmac, they built-in flex throughout the post and developed a new drop-clamp design in the frame. This makes the rear compliance of the 2020 Roubaix perfectly balanced with the front-end, so you get a smooth, balanced ride no matter what.

The new Roubaix frame delivers the perfect balance of aerodynamics, light overall weight, and compliance. Its FreeFoil tube shapes take cues from the Venge, and when validated in the Win Tunnel, the chassis is more aero than the Tarmac SL6. A Rider-First Engineered design ensures optimal stiffness and compliance across all sizes, as well as a frame weight below 900 grams.

As with all performance road bikes from Specialized, the design of the all-new Roubaix came from a heavy collaboration with their World Tour teams.

Specialized have made the decision that it’s time to ditch binary classifications and move beyond gender. Instead they simply want to specialise in offering the best bikes for all riders. They’ve learned that there’s likely more difference between two male cyclists than between a male and female. This means that gender alone doesn’t provide nearly enough data to specialise. It means that separating bikes by male or female is arbitrary and out-dated. The all-new Roubaix geometry was designed off of thousands of Retül rider fits. Now their best technology is offered for all riders in the widest range of fit and choice.
