Shimano STePS Electronic Shifting

With Shimano STePS you can use fully automatic shifting by combing the Shimano STePs DU-E6001 or DU-E6010 systems with the Shimano Di2 internal gear hub. Or if you get an electric mountain bike that features Shimano E8000 Series, it comes with built in Shimano’s di2 electronic shifting.

Based on the combination of cadence and speed, the Shimano STePS system automatically tells the Di2 hub what gear to shift into. So while you pedal, the drive unit brainstorms and decides to temporarily reduce chain tension so the hub can change to the right gear giving you an astonishingly smooth gear change!

How does it work?

In a nutshell, this means you get a smoother riding experience because you won’t have to worry whether you’re in the right gear or not. This automatic shifting is perfect if you’re not a comfortable shifter or want the smoothest possible ride; Shimano STePS will even automatically shift down to a lower gear as you stop, and give you that extra surge when you set off again for an easy start.

This system is specifically designed for mountain bikes and made for all adventurers, no matter age, skill, or endurance and has been favoured for it’s integration with their di2 electronic shifting and quiet motor whilst riding.

Shimano STePS MTB Features

  • RIDE LIKE MTB (Q FACTOR): The drive unit accommodates frames with shorter chainstays to give STEPS MTB equipped bikes typical mountain bike handling and manoeuvrability. Additionally the narrow Q factor is what ultimately provides an efficient pedal stroke. Combining these features ensures a perfectly balanced riding position and gains more ground with each pedal stroke, providing you a natural riding feeling.

  • DRIVE UNIT DU-E8000: The SHIMANO STEPS E8000 MTB components deliver a real MTB experience and give you the push when you really need it. The large capacity 504Wh battery ensures advanced and intuitive operation. Power is transmitted through a dedicated chainring in both 34T and 38T options, which can be used with an optional chain retention device. With an output torque of 70Nm, the powerful SHIMANO STEPS MTB motor is designed to make every moment of every ride fun.

  • CRANKSET / CHAIN DEVICE: Lightweight and rigid: the e-MTB dedicated crankset is characterized by its HOLLOWTECHII type BB axle. It comes in two crank options: the FC-E8050 with hollow crankarm and the FC-E8000 with solid crankarm. The e-MTB chain ring comes with the same profile as the Deore XT SM-CRM81 chainring.

  • CONTROL SWITCH / DISPLAY: The new e-MTB control switch for intuitive operation has an ergonomic switch position especially developed for MTB. In the Power Walk mode, motor assist is available while pushing the bike. You can wirelessly program it with your smartphone and tablet via E-tube.

  • BATTERY AND BATTERY MOUNT: The ultra durable waterproof battery has an MTB dedicated low profile design for improved impact and vibration resistance. The high-capacity battery with superb reach and 504Wh offers a consistent recharge and is compatible with the Shimano E8000 MTB series.
