Santa Cruz Heckler – Unlocking Rare Rides

Like all Santa Cruz bikes, the Heckler pedals well regardless of watts involved. The lower link VPP approach is tweaked to deliver slightly lower anti-squat versus a Bronson. This adds a touch more support and traction over rough stuff when pedalling seated – a major advantage of having a Shimano motor on your side.

And like every Santa Cruz bike, the Heckler is built for the rigors of true mountain biking. Shimano electronics were chosen for their refinement and reliability, while quality pivot hardware, easily replaceable radial bearings and no-nonsense internal cabling were considered with a mechanics sanity in mind!

Creating an e-MTB demanded careful consideration. For Santa Cruz, the Heckler’s potential to loft riders up to new heights is what gets us most excited. Trailblazers like Greg Williams and Danny MacAskill weren’t asking for a dumbed-down ride up. Or down. They wanted something to push their riding to new levels. And held manoeuvrability sacrosanct as the new tech was introduced.

The Heckler’s boundaries aren’t defined by distance, laps, or time. The boundaries in our head that say, “Don’t bother”, “Turn back”, “Impossible.” Smashing these boundaries is what got us hooked on riding in the first place. Heckler’s not about taking things easy, it’s about making things possible.

Santa Cruz Heckler – Technology

• VPP Kinematics - The 150mm travel lower-link VPP design marries the needs for downhill kicks with efficient pedalling prowess. We tuned it to have lower anti-squat (to sag) than our regular pedal bikes to allow you to keep pedaling (while seated) where normally you’d start standing. The more active suspension while pedaling creates better traction on technical climbs. But once you start mobbing down the trail the lower-link VPP system provides more mid-stroke and bottom out support than most other designs.
• CC Carbon Frame - The full CC carbon frame (front and rear triangle) and battery cover is lightweight and bombproof; the geometry is perfect for all-round modern trail riding; and the 150mm-travel lower-link VPP design is the most refined suspension design on any e-MTB. 
  Like every Santa Cruz, the Heckler is built for the rigors of true mountain biking. With quality pivot hardware, radial bearings (with lifetime replacement support), simple internal cabling and wiring, clean lines, design and build kits, and a lifetime warranty.

Santa Cruz Heckler – Integration

• Performance, Reliability, Fully Supported - There are three traits Santa Cruz bikes are legendary for, so when they build a complete bike they always pair their frames with components that are regarded similarly. For the all-important drive unit we used entirely Shimano Steps components - battery, charge port, power button, controllers. This means all parts, service and warranty is available through Shimano and Santa Cruz. Shimano stock e-parts through distributors and retailers the world over, the Shimano E-Tube app can troubleshoot any issues, and there’s already robust retailer training through S-Tec, consumer websites and a network of technical product support teams. 
  The Shimano motor and battery, as well as the whole parts spec was carefully chosen for performance, reliability and support.
• Shimano STEPS - The 250-watt Shimano Steps E-8000 motor is compact and light (6.34lbs/2.88kg) meaning it helps create one of the lightest e-MTBs out there.
• 504wh Integrated Battery - The E-8035 battery is Shimano’s latest integrated battery. It provides 500 watt-hours of power, is lightweight (6.4lbs/2.9kg), is fully removable/replaceable using just a keyless 4mm hex latch and is protected by a Santa Cruz CC carbon battery cover.
• Smart Spec - The Shimano STEPS system is also devoid of any large, clumsy displays that are impractical in real mountain biking situations. More so, there’s less to go wrong or break in case of an tumble. Santa Cruz used Shimano’s two compact E-8000 (color) and E-7000 (B&W) displays paired with a E-7000 mode switch to create a simple integrated cockpit. The switch is unobtrusive, intuitive and has the best dropper lever compatibility. The Shimano Steps app can be connected via Bluetooth or plug-in to adjust the power settings of the drive unit. It also allows for powerful management of the assist levels of the three support levels (two preset and one custom mode) of the Eco, Trail and Boost modes. It also provides diagnostic capabilities to troubleshoot any issues you may have.

Santa Cruz Heckler – Components

• Santa Cruz Di2 Handlebar - Santa Cruz are all about making the riding experience the top priority, so they made the integration of the motor controls seamless by creating their very own Santa Cruz Di2 Carbon handlebar. The internal switch wiring (under grip groove and routing holes) results in a clean, tidy cockpit, free of clutter and loose hanging wires. The bar itself is 35mm diameter, 800mm wide, with a 5-degree upsweep and 8-degree backsweep. Moreso, the bar has the same Di2 groove and holes on both sides in case you do wish to further integrate a complete Shimano Di2 drivetrain (or other wiring fixtures). This bar comes stock on Complete Heckler bikes S-level and up, and is available aftermarket.
• Reserve DH Rim - Reserve rims are already renowned as the strongest, most trusted carbon options for MTBs so it makes sense to use an even beefier version for the Heckler – which will be ridden harder than ever, for longer, more often. It’s paired with a 28-hole Reserve 30 wheel up front and the hubs are all super reliable DT Swiss and Industry9 hubs that have quick engagement and dependable under the kind of loads that are likely when the extra torque of the motor-assist is available. Like all Reserve wheels these have a lifetime warranty.
  The Reserve wheelset is standard on the X01 and XX1 build kits but is also available aftermarket.
• SRAM Eagle 12-Speed - The SRAM Eagle cassettes and chains are e-bike rated so Santa Cruz kept the build kit consistent with their whole line. The wide-range 12-speed Eagle cassettes and 34-tooth chainring give you the most gear range for tackling whatever climbs you encounter.

Santa Cruz Heckler – Build Kits

All Santa Cruz Heckler build kits come with SRAM four-piston brakes, 200mm rotors, Eagle drivetrains, RockShox Super Deluxe rear shocks with piggyback and e-bike rated, burly suspension forks, like the FOX 36.
