Sprightly climbs towards the clouds, wicked descents on the other side &#8211; they demand both superior handling and an unrivalled ride from a bike that\u2019s built to be the epitome of quality, performance, and style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking The Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;set themselves a goal: not to adhere to any of their preconceived notions around building a road bike. To do something different than simply apply everything that they\u2019ve learned about making bikes over the last half-century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where did this take them?&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;are, of course, as well-versed in the norms of cycling culture as they are in the rules of the UCI. However, neither of these confines would have any bearing on their process.&nbsp;<strong>Specialized&nbsp;<\/strong>instead placed all focus on the importance of creating an instrument of purely transcendent bike experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Rules Did Specialized Break?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Break The Rules of Designing Bikes<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Reshaping the future of Modern Road Bikes.<\/li><li><strong>Break The Rules Of Riding Bikes<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Let\u2019s not forget this is supposed to be fun.<\/li><li><strong>Break The Rules Of Racing Bikes<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Accidentally (on purpose) went lighter than the rules allow. They\u2019re rolling with it.<\/li><li><strong>Break The Rules They Created For Themselves<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; This is a big step for&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>. Smaller logos, subtle paint schemes. You have to go a little rogue to make this happen.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIt was hard for many people here to wrap their heads around a high-performance road bike that wasn\u2019t focused on racing. We were afraid that the project would meet resistance and get cancelled, so our team worked in relative secrecy for over a year. No one knew about the project until the design was finalized, and we were making our first frames.\u201d<\/p><cite> <strong>Road &amp; Gravel Category Leader,<br>Stewart Thompson<\/strong> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Billions of Calculations in Pursuit of One Thing &#8211; The Perfect Ride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flipping The Script On How To Build Bikes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;know that shape contributes to the vast majority of a bike\u2019s performance, and that\u2019s why the&nbsp;<strong>Aethos<\/strong>&nbsp;was born from a \u201cEureka\u201d moment in the test lab.&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;engineers studied the flexing and breathing of carbon frames in the pedalling test rig, and they realized the industry\u2019s understanding of how forces flow through a frame was incomplete, with room still there for massive improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/llke\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/10\/aethos-cloud-1024x549.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/llke\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/10\/aethos-cloud-1024x549.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/llke\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/10\/aethos-cloud-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/llke\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/10\/aethos-cloud-768x411.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/llke\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/10\/aethos-cloud-1536x823.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Immense supercomputer simulations &#8211; more than any humans can do in a lifetime &#8211; were used to subtly alter round tube shapes. This made their shapes more conical in key areas, delivering huge gains in stiffness and balance with the absolute minimum amount of material.<strong>&nbsp;Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;have added nothing extra here except more stability and integrity. They emphasize that this is a shape story of how and why the shapes work within this bike. The outcome of&nbsp;<strong>Aethos<\/strong>&nbsp;represents an entirely new way for&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;in designing bikes. Why is this so important? Because it will shape how they build all of their bikes moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Lazy Fibres<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe first frame was 545 grams. We put it on the test machine and the frame behaved so beautifully &#8211; it was so stable. We only had to add 10 grams, and we could test-ride the frame. That was the moment we knew we had discovered something big.\u201d<\/p><cite> <strong>Aethos Engineering Lead,<br>Peter Denk<\/strong> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;believes the only thing coming along for the ride should be you. If the vast majority of the frame\u2019s performance is dictated by shape, then the other main focus should be on the materials used and the manner in which they are connected &#8211; the frame\u2019s layup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leisurelakesbikes.com\/bikes\/specialized-aethos\/instock\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/license.citruslime.com\/cs\/blogs\/llke\/specialized-s-works-aethos-8-10-blog-feature-4_76BE44E4.jpg\" alt=\"specialized-s-works-aethos-8-10-blog-feature-4\" title=\"Flipping The Script On How To Build Bikes\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When continuing to study how these frames move under load,&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;determined that there were too many \u201cstiffness layers\u201d (or extra plies) added in the creation of traditional frames. So, with these new tube shapes, they needed an entirely new way to lay-up frames. Thankfully, it\u2019s one that resulted in reducing the number of needed plies by 11% compared to the&nbsp;<strong>S-Works SL6<\/strong>&nbsp;(which was already well known for being pretty damn great). By utilizing larger, longer, and more continuous, unbroken plies, they were able to achieve more consistent positioning than on any frame they\u2019ve made before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interesting thing to note is that the wall thicknesses of the tubes, themselves, are substantial throughout the frame, but because of the smaller number of the stiffness layers, the overall weight went down significantly. No dead weight &#8211; The only thing along for the ride should be you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leisurelakesbikes.com\/bikes\/specialized-aethos\/instock\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/license.citruslime.com\/cs\/blogs\/llke\/Aethos-Frame-stress-chart_017E2CEB.png\" alt=\"Aethos Frame stress chart\" title=\"No Lazy Fibres\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Accidentally&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Illegal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specialized&nbsp;<\/strong>chased ride quality with the&nbsp;<strong>S-Works<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Aethos<\/strong>, not a number. That said, we all know a light, stiff, and balanced bike is pure magic at the pedals. The result, however, is the lightest disc road frame ever produced, with no gimmick builds and a weight as light as 5.9kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be blunt, the&nbsp;<strong>Specialized S-Works Aethos<\/strong>&nbsp;is very illegal in some racing circles. That said, it\u2019s still rated for a 275 pound (124kg) rider and possesses all the telepathic handling, response, and stiffness targets that you\u2019ve come to expect from every bike&nbsp;<strong>Specialized<\/strong>&nbsp;has made.
