Bontrager OMW Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Fatbiking.eu, on 03/01/2018

Since the arrival of Bontrager’s OMW it has only been a question of time for me to get my hands on some, only down to the fact that it has a removable inner boot. fter the sceptic initial inspection and having been in a situation which urged me to buy some boots as I planned to go on a bike packing trip to one of the coldest parts in Switzerland, I quickly got a pair at my LBS. Usually I wear 44.5 Euro size and in the OWM I use a 45 and their snug with sport socks. Checking the boot I was confident I wouldn’t need thick socks in it as I rarely ride in temperatures beyond -20 °C. Initial thought was how light they are, how easy to put on (drawstrings, Velcro, zip), what a great little lock for sealing off the cuff and that the zip seems to be the weakest link.

Friday started with a long train journey on which I couldn’t always spread out, so my feet where in the brutally warm boots. That’s when I first sweated. I don’t need much to feel comfy in the cold and my feet soon feel sweaty indoors. After a very brief ride to find a bivy spot at -15 °C my feet where still roasting. I got into my sleeping bag (rated -3 °C comfort) with my clothes on, a thin puffy smock and the OWM inner boots. Problem, they were too warm again. I sweated more and more and in the morning my feet felt somewhat cold, most likely from the accumulated humidity. After brekkers I rolled down to the first village at -16 °C losing sensation in all fingers. My feet still felt a little cold, but not sore or numb. After what must have been 1-2 hours of riding they were comfy and warm again, still at -15 – -16 °C.

I rode on an old and narrow snowshoe track that would see me hit deep snow once in a while. I often struggled to get back on track and once in a while the bike and I would be emerged in snow completely. Not a single flake entered my boots. I didn’t use any gaiters and wouldn’t have needed them either. The little string around the top of the cuff is dead easy to adjust, lock and unlock and does a fantastic job. The sleek outer of the boot sheds the snow formidably.

After 4 h of riding I dropped into a restaurant where I unpacked my feet. My socks were dry! The inner boot was slightly damp at the toe piece, which is reinforced and doesn’t seem to breathe as good as the rest of the inside of the inner boot. There’s was some dampness on the outside of the inner boot and inside the outer boot. I think that’s quite ingenious. The fleece lining, Thinsulate insulation and thin polyester (I guess it’s not nylon) work together really well in transporting humidity away from the feet. Soon after I was back en route I stayed there for another 8 h. I always felt comfy riding and due to the right amount of flex in the sole also comfy during hike-a-bike and messing about taking photos.

After a weekend in the OMW I came to the conclusions that Bontrager is spot on in just about all issues. The sole has the right stiffness for all day riding and hiking comfort. Especially during bike packing the removable inner boot is a game changer. Yet it just doesn’t stop here. The inner and outer boot are dead easy to open and close with thick gloves. It sheds snow really well, manages humidity astoundingly, it’s light (1268 g a pair size 45), can be used with studs (machined mine into pointy ones – were a treat on ice), seals the cuff off really well and in general is very well designed and thought through. Compared to other winter riding boots it seems a good deal too.

I can highly recommend the OMW if you’re looking for a boot to cover anything from 0 – -20 °C and facilitate your biking life in winter. Especially for those long winter races it’s an ideal boot. For temperatures beyond -20 °C I’d just get it two sizes too big and use a warmer sock combination (or polypropylene, thin neoprene and wool socks for multi days).

Bontrager OMW Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Bicycle Times Mag, on 31/05/2017

Cycling-specific, cold-weather boots have long seemed like a luxury item to me. That changed when I decided to get a fat bike for riding on snowy trails and decided to suck it up and pedal around my Colorado hometown all through winter. Suddenly, no overshoe was warm enough and no casual snow boot stiff or snug enough. After spending a few weeks with Bontrager’s brand-new and rather svelte-looking Old Man Winter (OMW) boots, I am completely sold on the idea.

The OMW helps allay that with a fleece-lined, removable inner bootie packed with 200 grams of 3M Thinsulate insulation. The stretchy outer boot is made of waterproof, breathable OutDry material and features sealed zippers. The inner bootie has a drawstring-type closure. Paired with two outer Velcro straps, the boots allow for a very snug fit and offer plenty of adjustment. My only minor complaints are that it can be difficult to zip the ankle gaiter over the plastic pull tab on the laces and, if you don’t manage to raise the zipper completely to the top of the ankle, the pedaling motion will push it down.

The liner is removable. I think the shoe would be much too roomy and not as comfortable to ride without, but I’m glad I can wash it. A rough material on the heel works as advertised to prevent the liner from slipping around inside the boot. The sole of the liner is not protected with any kind of grippy material, i.e. it’s not made to be removed and worn around your house as a slipper (which I would totally do).

Sole stiffness is a 6 on Bontrager’s scale (the highest stiffness on any shoe the company offers is a 14). Walking around and driving are comfortable for short distances. I didn’t feel any bending nor did I feel the cleats poking through when mashing the pedals on steep, challenging trail climbs. While they might not be rigid enough for skinny-tire go-fast types, I am plenty happy with them on cold, wet road rides and they offer enough flex for all-day adventures that might involve espresso stops or setting up a campsite. Traction is good on dry land but, as to be expected, the lugs will get snow-packed if you’re trudging around in powder.

The boots come with substantial cleat covers for the flat-pedal community. If you plan to see more serious snow or ice action, the sole allows for two toe spikes (not included) and each boot has a gaiter hook just below the toe-box strap. Another nice touch are Velcro tabs on the rear ankles of the shoes that are designed as a place to put small red lights.

If you’re planning to spend several months riding in sub-freezing temperatures—whether you’re commuting or mountain biking—consider these boots. I have enjoyed their warmth, comfort and adjustability, and no longer see a well-made shoe like this as just a luxury.
