Hope HB160 27.5 Mountain Bike Black

The Hope HB160 27.5 Mountain Bike 2019 was always a long time dream for Hope co-founders Ian Weatherill and the late Simon Sharpand and has been revamped and improved for 2019. Hope saw the opportunity to combine the needs of the frame and component designer into one project, allowing them to uncompromisingly create their vision of the perfect bike. After countless prototypes & drawing board sketches Hope finally landed on their final build and then improved it for 2019!

Hope HB160 - Changes for 2019

SRAM X01 EAGLE DRIVE TRAIN- For 2019, we are introducing the SRAM Eagle X01 system to the bike. It’s a full group set including cranks and all bikes will leave the factory with this drivetrain. We have Hope cranks/chainring as an optional upgrade which will be sent with the bike and you will be responsible for fitting. The customer would retain the SRAM crank. *This is a stipulation from SRAM.
CARBON WHEELSET - Having sampled several carbon rims, we have settled on the Santa Cruz Reserve rims for a number of reasons – Solid ride feel, not too stiff, good price point and of course lifetime warranty. The wheels are built here at Hope on whichever hub colour you require. Warranty claims would go through ourselves. Carbon wheels are available to buy with bikes and separately to existing customers- strictly for the HB.160 only.
OHLINS SUSPENSION PACKAGE - In response to feedback, we have added another suspension option, further opening up customisation options. We can offer Ohlins new RXF 36 Trail fork and their TTX22 Coil shock for £50 upgrade fee. Due to dimensions, the air shock is not available. *Please note Ohlins suspension packages are available from MID MARCH 2019.
FOX COIL SHOCK OPTION - The Fox DH X2 Coil will also be available on 2019 bikes. The shock will come with 475 spring as standard and come at an additional cost.
DECAL KIT - Feedback from dealers has suggested that several HB owners have requested decal kits to fit Fork, Shock and Rims. We have taken the liberty of creating a custom HB.160 decal package to match all seven colour options plus a special yellow set to match the Ohlins suspension package.

Hope Tech - UK Carbon Production

There's a wealth of knowledge around carbon fibre in the UK, with the majority of the current F1 teams being based here as well as a thriving aerospace industry. This gives Hope access to some of the worlds most talented carbon fibre engineers. The challenge was taking their skill at producing batches of two components, and scaling it up to production quantites.

Since Hope's existing products are manufactured using the processes most companies only use to produce their first prototypes ie CNC machined rather than cast or precision forged, it's not been an unusual experience for Hope. Mould production has been one of the easiest processes since these are made on CNC machines and they already have a few of these.

Cutting and laying up the carbon sheet is quite a labour intensive process, but keeping production on site in Barnoldswick gives Hope total confidence in the quality of parts produced.

In the past there have been reservations internally about the safety of manufacturing in carbon fibre and although carbon fibre production is a relatively new process to Hope, with the correct controls & working practices in place, it can be made an extremely safe process. Also by manufacturing in their own factory in the UK, Hope abide to strict health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for their staff.

How To Measure Yourself

Measure Your Height

Our handy size charts match your height to the appropriate frame size so you need to be sure you’ve measured your height accurately.

  1. Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
  2. Make sure legs are together and your shoulders are back.
  3. Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
  4. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.

Range of Reach

For most people to get the right frame size, measuring your height will suffice. However, you may find that your height is on the borderline of the range we suggest for a particular frame. If this occurs you need to measure the range of your reach or “Ape Index”. This will ensure you get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and your saddle.

  1. Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
  2. Life your arms out horizontally either side of you.
  3. Measure the distance from fingertip of one hand to fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
  4. Subtract your height from this figure to get your Ape Index.
  5. If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
  6. If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height you need the smaller size.

Stand Over Height

You should also consider your inside leg measurement when choosing your bike to ensure adequate stand over height. Stand over height is the clearance between the top tube and the bottom of your crotch. For mountain bikes we recommend a distance of 2-4 inches and for road or hybrid bikes 1-2 inches of clearance is required. This will ensure comfort when you’re stopped and standing astride the bike.

Our bike sizing charts take stand over height into consideration but if you have a particularly long or short inside leg measurement in relation to your height you will need to bear this in mind when selecting your frame size.

Riding Style

The way you ride and the type of bike you are into will also impact the frame size you should choose. For example, a trail devotee looking for an aggressive ride may prefer a smaller, more manoeuvrable bike size. It all comes down to personal preference and how the bike feels to you.

Our sizing charts aim to be as specific as possible so you can look up the particular type, make and model of bike you’re looking for. Remember, the sizes given in our guides are suggestions and should be used for general advice only. For the best possible fit  we recommend popping in to your local Leisure Lakes Bikes store, or call 0800 083 0888 for expert advice tailored to you.
