Northwave Flash Thinsulate Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Cycling Weekly.com, on 03/01/2018

Cycling footwear for winter conditions is a bit tricky, but the Northwave Flash TH cycling shoes provide a good option for cold, dry conditions. Built like a normal three bolt cycling shoe, their uppers are completely enclosed and they are lined with a quilted layer of Thinsulate insulation. There’s extra insulation in the toe area.

The uppers of the Northwave Flash TH cycling shoes are also waterproof and breathable, so they shrug off surface spray. They have a wrap-over design which also helps keep out wet and a reinforced, anti-abrasion toe. Northwave includes reflective elements in the rear and sides of the shoe to improve visibility.

The Northwave Flash TH cycling shoes are closed with one of Northwave’s SLW2 dials. I didn’t find it quite as intuitive as Boa’s best dials and it was slightly tricky to turn when wearing thick winter gloves, but coupled with the zig-zag nylon cable it does allow you to adjust the shoe’s upper for a comfortable fit. You can also loosen the upper one click at a time and it’s easy to unlock the dial to quickly fully open the upper once you get home.

The Northwave Flash TH shoes feel a bit short and narrow for their size, particularly if you want to wear thicker winter socks. There’s actually enough insulation in the upper that I could use a standard, thin cycling sock in typical UK winter conditions without feeling cold, but I sized up to get a good fit. It isn’t a bad idea to give your feet a bit more room in cold conditions anyway, so that your toes can move around and keep warmer.

The cleat is fixed with three non-sliding bolts. These don’t allow you quite as much adjustment of cleat position as most summer shoes, so I found that the cleat was a bit further back than I would normally have it, even when pushed as far forward as possible.

Pedalling efficiency feels good and the uppers of the Northwave Flash TH cycling shoes are fit comfortably. There’s no tendency to heel-lift due to a grippy lining to the heel cup. You get a pedalling feel much like a summer shoe, but the warmth is more than adequate for use through the majority of the UK winter.

The Northwave Flash TH cycling shoes will take you through the majority of your winter rides in comfort. They feel like a normal road shoe, are well insulated and have a reasonably stiff sole. They cope well with damp road conditions, but adjustment is a bit harder than with a Boa dial.

Northwave Flash Thinsulate Winter Shoes Black review by Professional Review from Road.cc, on 03/01/2018

Keeping your extremities warm is a must for winter riding and these Northwave Flash TH winter shoes address the issues of chilly toes without the faff of layering up. A distinct lack of vents keeps the wind at bay, although if youre used to a stiff carbon sole on your summer shoes you may find these a little soft for performance riding. Northwave has been making their GTX winter boots for a good few years now and these Flash TH shoes are a less extreme version for those who dont necessarily need the full extreme weather protection.

Keeping the icy cool wind out is the main objective here and they do that by removing any form of vent from the upper. The shoe is designed to encase your foot, so instead of the usual two sections being pulled by the straps, laces or whatever together over a tongue, the Flash THs wrap over each other before being held in position by a Boa style cable system.

Cable-tightened systems like these are great for getting an even tension spread over the top of your foot so you can get a snug fit without pressure points or hot spots. They are quick and easy to adjust too. Using Northwaves SLW2 ratchet system, you can have them done up in a matter of seconds just by turning the dial. Each increment of the ratchet pulls or releases 0.7mm of cable so you can ultra-fine-tune them to get that fit spot on.

Northwave is often quite roomy when it comes to sizing, so they can be a bit try before you buy to get the perfect fit. I own some Northwave mountain bike shoes in a 44 which fit but are a little too snug for winter use; I cant get away with thicker socks, for instance. In all other shoes Im a 45, the size Im testing here, and while the Flash THs felt a little big at first, they soon felt just right. Firstly when it comes to cold weather things like tight gloves or shoes make a real difference to blood flow, often leading to those vulnerable body parts becoming uncomfortably cold, so having some element of movement here is a big bonus. There is also room to wear thicker merino winter socks if the temperature really starts to drop below freezing.

On the outside the uppers man-made material doesnt feel any thicker than any other shoe (other than those designed specifically for climbing) so you dont get any added bulk which is good: spinning heavy shoes around is something you dont want to be doing. Its water repellent too, which keeps your feet dry from road spray if the roads already wet when you head out, but obviously if it is actually raining water still enters from your tights as it runs down into the shoe. Once the water is in there, its staying in there for a while too, until it seeps out around the edge of the insole to escape through the vent/drainage holes in the sole.

If you go out for an exceptionally spirited ride this flex can easily lead to hot spots around the cleat area, which is very uncomfortable. Keep things at a more moderate pace though, and I can live with them on rides of four to five hours. On the whole I like the Flash THs. They are great at what they are designed for: keeping the elements out and making sure your feet remain warm.
