Huck Norris FAQ

Q: Ok, did you guys just make it out of camping mattress?

A: No, not this version. During past 4 years we have made prototypes from just about all the things that are light and can absorb impacts energy well. Fortunately one of us has material scientist as a neighbour, and through him we got to develop material that is optimised to dampen impacts in force just below what light sidewall protected (read: Exo, Snakeskin, etc.) tyres can survive. So that Huck Norris will absorb as much energy from the impact as it can, and then cells in Huck Norris will break if the impact is hard enough, almost always still saving the tyre and rim. If it would be any harder material you could puncture your tyre before breaking the cells of Huck Norris.

We are looking into making it in more lively colour than this Shady Grey, so that people can start asking whether we made it out of kids beach toys.

Q: Why?

A: It’s really simple, if you want more protection from pinch flats in your tubeless setup, you "can" add material to sidewalls of the tyre, but that stiffens the casing and results significantly more rolling resistance. We added the material inside the tyre, so that it has no impact on rolling resistance, and material is exactly where it needs to be to dampen hard impacts to the tyre, making it light, simple and efficient. We are all racing MTB's ourselves. We have tried all current commercial solutions available and ghetto tubeless. We were not happy, and this is the best we could come up with. Ghetto tubeless works, but is major pain to install. Other commercial solutions are over engineered, heavy, expensive and require rim modifications or weaken the rim too much.

Q: Will it soak in the sealant?

A: Material will take 2% of sealant into itself. In other words; No. Over time, when cells inside Huck Norris break from hard impacts it takes little bit more sealant, but nothing significant.

Q: How does tire width influence the correct size?

A: If you run something like 21-24mm rim, you are ok with 2.5” size tire for the size S, but if you are on the 25mm rim, and on 2.5” tyre, you are risking that Huck Norris won’t be in the right place during impact for the size S and you should choose size M instead.

Q: How about 26” version?

A: Uh, none of us had any 26” rims around when we were drawing this current version, but don’t worry, you can just cut it down to fit your 26” setup and it will work just as well, the length you need to shorten is 19cm.

Huck Norris Tubeless Tyre Protection review by Factory Jackson, on 02/06/2017

With about 20psi in my tyres, the first ride on the Huck Norris system was promising. I could feel the rims hitting roots and rocks out on the trails, but the feeling was dulled and doesn’t feel quite as damaging as rims bottoming out normally.

Unlike the Schwalbe Procore system, Huck Norris doesn’t add anything to tyre stability – but definitely gives you peace of mind when firing in to rough and rocky terrain.

I’ve been riding Huck Norris for a couple of months, and in honesty had just forgotten it was there until I landed from a drop right on to the side of a rock jutting from the ground. There was a bit of a bang, and I managed to damage the rim doing so – but the tyre did not receive any damage.

It was just the sort of impact that could slice a tyre, and on inspection after the Huck Norris insert split at the point of rim damage.Inspecting the insert revealed a few other small splits – a sign that it does indeed go some way to protecting tyres and rims.

For what it costs and what it weighs (under 90grams uncut), the Huck Norris system is a good system for helping reduce rim damage and tyre slashes. Well worth a look.

    WE SAY

Huck Norris puncture protection is a great system for that bit extra protection when belting it along rough trails.

It weighs virtually nothing, so you can leave in all year round – and if you felt you only wanted extra protection on your back wheel then you could always go halves with a mate… No star rating given - read the full Factory Jackson review!

  • No more nasty dents in your rims. True: Riding Huck Norris-less, using a SRAM Rail 50 wheelset I suffered a ride ending rim ding using a mid-weight E13 TRS tire inflated to 28psi. After some workshop time, the rim lived again and I installed the Huck. I then chose one of Finale Ligures most rocky and treacherous trails, and starting at 26/28psi, I hit everything possible. I then dropped the tire pressure by two psi per run, eventually getting as low as 10/12psi. Not only was it incredibly scary and dangerous trying to stay on this high-speed trail at this pressure, it also ended happily with the rim damage free.

I checked the rim after riding and it had survived perfectly intact. Nearly every time I hit a square edge, I winced, awaiting the well-known rock to rim dinging noise, but it never came. Sometimes there was a noise, which could have been the rim connecting with a rock outside of the tire, or the noisy bladed spokes of the Rail wheelset.

    Thoughts?

The Huck weighed 84 grams for a 29" tire. But, once coated in latex, this figure jumped to around 120 grams after I had removed it and let most of the fluid run off. The foam is closed cell, so wont absorb fluid, except where it has been cut into shape or damaged by hitting rocks, opening the cells and allowing fluid to enter. Also, the tubeless fluid has more surface area to cover compared to the inside of your tire; you will need some more fluid.

To some people, adding up to 240 grams to your total wheel weight will be sacrilege. But for people that err towards riding gnarly stuff, this wont be an issue. In comparison, Schwalbes dual chamber ProCore system that offers some of the same benefits weighs around 440 grams in total.

€79 euros might sound like a lot of money, but if you are a regular rim smasher, then the Huck could save you money in the long run. It will wear out eventually and need replacing, or quickly if you manage to strike the rim in the same place repeatedly. The foam cells will break down upon impact.

The Huck Norris may be of most advantage to trials riders, where a very low tire pressure is a must and chances of pinch punctures are very high. People who ride choppy and greasy technical trails can gain an advantage by using lower pressures for grip. Bike park hooligans who ride smooth hardpack will be using higher tire pressures and have the least to gain from Hucks rim and tire protecting qualities.

When it debuted, there were plenty of "Why didnt I think of that?" and "Is that a piece of a yoga mat?" comments. Curious as to if Huck Norris was up to the task, over the last few months on various bikes, I have been trying to smash into obstacles to try and break him down.

This strip of high-density foam sits inside your tubeless tyre and is claimed to prevent punctures by cushioning the tyre when it encounters the kinds of impact (think hitting a big rock at speed) that would normally pinch it against the rim.

There are three widths to suit different rims and it can be easily cut down from 29in to 27.5in (or even 26in). Our uncut medium-width test sample weighed 84g. Once fitted it soaked up a little sealant which bumped the weight up to around 120g. This means it’s worth adding a little extra sealant to compensate.

Instillation is a cinch, and after six months riding rocky terrain everywhere from BikePark Wales to the Enduro World Series round in Finale Ligure, Italy, we’ve had just one puncture. That’s got to be a record! The system allows you to get away with lighter tyre casings (we’ve been running Schwalbe Snakeskin tyres in place of our usual Super Gravity’s) and hit rock hardens harder with less of fear of flatting. It lessens the changes of small scuffs and dents in your rims too, but big impacts can still destroy wheels – we totalled a DT Swiss EX 1501 (although the Huck Norris insert ensured the tyre stayed inflated).

It’s expensive for a strip of foam, but the shape and materials have been carefully chosen and its currently the cheapest and lightest in-tyre puncture preventer on the market. Review from MBUK.
