Cannondale SuperSix EVO Carbon Disc Ultegra Road Bike 2017 Volt Green ,  On

A new disc brake equipped version of the Cannondale SuperSix Evo has just been launched. Whilst out in Austria we managed take one of the new bikes into the mountains

I am huge fan of the Cannondale SuperSix Evo. With skinny tubes, stays and a traditional frame shape, it may buck the current trend of aero bikes, however it is classically good looking and corners like its on rails. The handling characteristics of the current Evo (2016) really are tremendous, it is a joy to ride around corners.

It is a tough act to follow and there is always the worry that the structural changes required when equipping the bike with discs will drastically alter the way it feels, rides and handles. According to Cannondale, the aim of the new Cannondale SuperSix EVO Disc was to make a road bike equipped with discs that still retains the quality of ride and handling of the non disc version, while keeping the weight under the UCI limit of 6.8kg.

The rear caliper may have gone, but the Cannonade SuperSix EVO Disc retains the rear brake bridge. The bike’s designers told me that this was necessary to cope with the torsional strain in the rear triangle, which owing to the traditional (non compact) frame geometry creates a relatively large rear triangle. The cables are routed internally for nice clean look.

To put the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Disc to test, I took to the stunning roads around Kitzbuhel, Austria. This included an assault of the infamous Kitzbuheler Horn. For those not familiar, this climb is a fearsome hors catagorie monster, 9.7km in length with a gradient of 13%. This asphalt of unrelenting brutality is often featured in the Tour of Austria.

Our 56cm test model was equipped with Cannondale’s proprietary Hollowgram SI crankset and new Hollowgram wheels with a 35-millimeter depth and a 19-millimeter rim width. The groupset was Shimano Ultegra Di2 with hydraulic flat mount disc brakes. The total weight of the bike coming in at roughly 7.8kg. The front disc is 160mm while the rear is 140mm.

Braking hard through the front brake, the bike felt stable and I didn’t detect any shuddering or torque steer. The big question then: is the Cannonade SuperSix EVO Disc, better or worse than the non-disc version?

I am a fan, the engineers have done a great job of retaining the sublime, assured handling of the non disc version. It may not be as nimble when ascending, but it is certainly faster when descending. Although our test bike was significantly over the UCI limit, higher spec models will likely be very close, owing to how light the frame is.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Carbon Disc Ultegra Road Bike 2017 Volt Green ,  On

Where Cannondale has got it so right with this disc incarnation is that its retained the geometry from the superb standard Evo, so you get that same sharpness at the front end. On fast stretches, corners, and barreling down descents the front end feels totally planted, its unwavering nature enables you to hold your line and really exploit every bit of speed of your terrain. Under pedaling the frame is rock solid, so you feel every bit of effort at the wheels with no losses. Some will bemoan the Evo’s lack of a rear thru-axle (the fork uses an industry standard 12mm thru-axle), but I honestly couldn’t feel any discernible difference between the back end of the Evo and any of the thru-axle equipped bikes tested as part of this years Road Bike of the Year. In fact, the Evo’s back end feels as tight and solid as anything I’ve tried, and you get the bonus of simpler rear wheel removal and refitting. In the past weve criticised Cannondale in the value for money stakes, but for this year it has got the spec-to-price ratio pretty much spot on.

    Getting the right fit

The right size bike for your body size is essential to ensure the optimum experience, comfort and enjoyment as you ride. With sizing varying between the type of bike, the brand and even the model, getting the perfect fit can seem daunting. That’s why we’ve compiled a handy guide to help you get the correct size.

    Measure Your Height

Our handy size charts match your height to the appropriate frame size so you need to be sure you’ve measured your height accurately.

    1. Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
    2. Make sure legs are together and your shoulders are back.
    3. Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
    4. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.

    Range of Reach

For most people to get the right frame size, measuring your height will suffice. However, you may find that your height is on the borderline of the range we suggest for a particular frame. If this occurs you need to measure the range of your reach or “Ape Index”. This will ensure you get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and your saddle.

    1. Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
    2. Life your arms out horizontally either side of you.
    3. Measure the distance from fingertip of one hand to fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
    4. Subtract your height from this figure to get your Ape Index.
    5. If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
    6. If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height you need the smaller size.

    Stand Over Height

You should also consider your inside leg measurement when choosing your bike to ensure adequate stand over height. Stand over height is the clearance between the top tube and the bottom of your crotch. For mountain bikes we recommend a distance of 2-4 inches and for road or hybrid bikes 1-2 inches of clearance is required. This will ensure comfort when you’re stopped and standing astride the bike.

Our bike sizing charts take stand over height into consideration but if you have a particularly long or short inside leg measurement in relation to your height you will need to bear this in mind when selecting your frame size.

    Riding Style

The way you ride and the type of bike you are into will also impact the frame size you should choose. For example, a trail devotee looking for an aggressive ride may prefer a smaller, more manoeuvrable bike size. It all comes down to personal preference and how the bike feels to you.

Our sizing charts aim to be as specific as possible so you can look up the particular type, make and model of bike you’re looking for. Remember, the sizes given in our guides are suggestions and should be used for general advice only. For the best possible fit  we recommend popping in to your local Leisure Lakes Bikes store, or call 0800 083 0888 for expert advice tailored to you.
