Specialized 29" Mountain Bikes

As the 2014 Specialized mountain bike range hit the trails you are probably wondering what all the 29" wheel fuss is about. Specialized have been developing their 29er mountain bike range for a number of years and we think this year they are better than ever! Check out the full low down on the Specialized 29er Technology but to skim the surface here is a few facts:

  • Float over Obstacles. 29-inch wheels “float” over rocks, roots and sand; which gives the rider more control.
  • Roll over bumps. Thanks to a 6.1% lower angle over a 130mm bump, 29-inch wheels don’t get hung up on ledges or shelves.
  • Boost control. A longer section of tyre touches the ground. This expanded "contact patch" translates directly to increased control.
  • Go Faster Once rolling, a 29er wheel maintains momentum much better than the standard 26-inch.

Professional Review for Specialized Camber Comp Carbon 29er Mountain Bike 2014

"Impressively light yet tough and stiff rolling chassis, but more hesitant than expected when hammered"

The lynchpin of Specialized’s move into big wheels throughout its bike range, the Camber is a deservedly popular bike. Did it impress us enough in Wales to get on the What Mountain Bike Trail Bike of the Year 2013 podium, though?

Ride & handling: Tough and smooth XC bike but sketchy front end

As much as it’s tough enough in frame and wheel to take the fight to the trail, both travel and handling character confirm a more cross-country feel in its current state. This is good in some ways.

We certainly appreciated the more quick-witted steering feel on the tight climbing trails and slower switchback sections of our Coed y Brenin test trails, in Wales.

Pre-test riding had already confirmed it as a predictably stable rather than hyperactive machine, and one that makes the most of Specialized’s own impressively grippy Ground Control tyres when clawing up steep, technical climbs. We can’t help thinking those focused on going up will naturally gravitate towards the ferociously upwardly mobile Epic range.

At under 28lb it’s pretty light for a 29er trail bike, so while the wheels aren’t quite as quick to pick up speed, once you’re rolling it surges and climbs with a proper turbo-diesel muscularity.

The CTD shock lever lets you firm up the ride if you find fully open too pillowy, but with only 110mm stroke at either end it feels pretty tight anyway. Internal routing for a cable dropper post hints at more hardcore potential from the chunky cut frame, and the 26mm-wide rims put plenty of already generously sized rubber down. Traction is never an issue.

32 spokes each end keep these much tighter than the average wagon wheels when you start getting them sideways.

Verdict: 4/5

Download the Specialized Bike Sizing Guide PDF

The right size bike for your body size is essential to ensure the optimum experience, comfort and enjoyment as you ride. With sizing varying between the type of bike, the brand and even the model, getting the perfect fit can seem daunting. That’s why we’ve compiled a handy guide to help you get the correct size.

Measure Your Height

Our handy size charts match your height to the appropriate frame size so you need to be sure you’ve measured your height accurately.

  1. Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
  2. Make sure legs are together and your shoulders are back.
  3. Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
  4. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.

Range of Reach

For most people to get the right frame size, measuring your height will suffice. However, you may find that your height is on the borderline of the range we suggest for a particular frame. If this occurs you need to measure the range of your reach or “Ape Index”. This will ensure you get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and your saddle.

  1. Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
  2. Life your arms out horizontally either side of you.
  3. Measure the distance from fingertip of one hand to fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
  4. Subtract your height from this figure to get your Ape Index.
  5. If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
  6. If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height you need the smaller size.

Stand Over Height

You should also consider your inside leg measurement when choosing your bike to ensure adequate stand over height. Stand over height is the clearance between the top tube and the bottom of your crotch. For mountain bikes we recommend a distance of 2-4 inches and for road or hybrid bikes 1-2 inches of clearance is required. This will ensure comfort when you’re stopped and standing astride the bike.

Our bike sizing charts take stand over height into consideration but if you have a particularly long or short inside leg measurement in relation to your height you will need to bear this in mind when selecting your frame size.

Riding Style

The way you ride and the type of bike you are into will also impact the frame size you should choose. For example, a trail devotee looking for an aggressive ride may prefer a smaller, more manoeuvrable bike size. It all comes down to personal preference and how the bike feels to you.

Our sizing charts aim to be as specific as possible so you can look up the particular type, make and model of bike you’re looking for. Remember, the sizes given in our guides are suggestions and should be used for general advice only. For the best possible fit  we recommend popping in to your local Leisure Lakes Bikes store, or call 0800 083 0888 for expert advice tailored to you.
