Spread The Word

The Trek Fuel EX 8 29er Full Suspension Mountain Bike 2014 is packed with performance-enhancing technology to give you a better ride. The bike has big 29 inch wheels to provide you with more momentum and a better angle of attack. You’ll also notice better traction to improve climbing and cornering ability when you’re riding. The bike also has G2 Geometry which features a custom-offset fork and advanced frame geometry for precise handling at low speed without compromising high-speed stability.

  • 29” specific bike for a more enjoyable ride
  • G2 geometry
  • Active Braking Pivot technology
  • Dual Rate Control Valve technology
  • Full floater
  • E2 Tapered head tube
  • Internal cable routing

Upgrades from Trek Fuel EX 7 29

  • Shimano SLX/XT Shadow Plus drivetrain
  • Shimano SLX hydraulic disc brakes
  • Bontrager Rhythm Elite seatpost

Active Braking Pivot Technology

This full suspension mountain bike features Trek’s patented Active Braking Pivot technology that keeps your suspension active whether you’re on or off the brakes. Other full suspension systems firm up under braking, reducing your control when you need it most, ABP avoids that and it allows your suspension to work freely. When your suspension stays active under braking, you stay in control, meaning that you can brake later in a turn. You can also maintain better rear wheel traction in stutter bumps, go faster, and just have more fun.

Dual Rate Control Valve Technology

The Fuel EX 8 has the DCRV advantage; it has two separate air chambers which work together to give you consistent use of full travel and incredible control throughout the entire travel range. This means you can ride bigger lines, flow through braking bumps with ease, and ride with more control. DRCV seamlessly adjusts its air volume based on the bump size you encounter. You get supple feel on the small bumps, seamless control over midsize bumps and harsh hits with less rear wheel hang-up, and seemingly bottomless travel on the rough stuff so big hits seem to disappear.

Frame Technology

The Fuel EX 8’s frame features EVO Link; Trek’s evolution of the rocker link from the plate-and-bolt style used on most suspension bikes to a one-piece rocker link. This lighter link provides a stronger connection point between the front and rear triangles, creating a stiffer frame for greater control with minimal weight.

The frame also has an E2 tapered head tube; this is the evolution of the traditional 1-1/8" headset to a tapered head tube, fork, and headset system. E2 tapers from a 1.5" lower to a 1 1/8" upper headset to provide more material where it matters most, resulting in a stronger, lighter frame with point-and-shoot control.

There is a lot of internal cable routing to give this bike one of the cleanest setups you’ve ever seen. The frame also has a full floater, attaching the shock to two moving linkage points so it can respond better to bumps across a wide variety of terrain. It feels like more travel, but it's not. It's smarter travel.

Professional Review for Trek Fuel EX 8 29er Full Suspension Mountain Bike 2014

"A very capable and enjoyable cruiser, but relatively heavy. The fork undermines dynamic riding"

Trek’s Fuel EX has been a Trail Bike of the Year winner as well as a close contender. It’s still a very safe, efficient partner for tackling technical singletrack or long days in the hills, but it’s focused more towards cruise control than chasing the ragged edge.

Ride & handling: Suited to all-day adventures

The exposed rocks of our heavily armoured test trails highlighted a harsher, more chattery ride than the 650b and 29in wheels created on competing Trail Bike of the Year contenders. The Bontrager rubber gives good grip and their low weight helps to keep the ride lively rather than lung busting on more stop/start trails.

Add the Shimano based-spec and you’re looking at a bike that’s really well suited to heading out into the hills with a map in your pack and an adventure in your head. It felt very comfortable among the vistas and long winding trails of the second day of wild, mountain testing. It worked really well on more natural trails where big hits were generally singular and corners too loose or greasy to load the fork up.

The Trek started to feel out of its depth against the latest bikes when we got aggressive on trail centre terrain. The DRCV twin chamber fork moves less than a standard one when pedalling but swallows bigger hits with full-stroke eagerness. This reduces loose and chattery corner traction, and the sudden dive comes at just the point you want to drive the front end through berms or keep it high under hard braking.

Even with the broad bar overseeing your steering efforts, the front end feels steeper than it is, with a nervous, fidgety feel in corners if you’re pushing it hard.

Frame & equipment: Sharp-tracking frameset with DRCV shock

With 130mm of rear stroke and 130mm up front the Fuel sits bang in the centre of the do-it-all category for travel, but the wide bar suggests a bit more attitude and control than you might expect. The proprietary DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) dual chamber shock also extends impact control deeper than you’d expect at first.

In normal pedalling or rolling situations the top chamber gives a tight and firmly-sprung response that keeps power inputs crisp. This helps offset the high overall weight of the bike on climbs or sprints, to the point where it’s a surprise what you’ve been propelling when you pick it up.

If you wallop something bigger the second chamber of the shock is prodded open to increase its impact appetite, stopping the big hit Buckaroo and pinch flat problems you’d otherwise expect from a 130mm 26in-wheeled bike.

The Active Braking Pivot axle rear pivot and Full Floater shock – it’s squeezed between linkage and the chainstay tip rather than frame – keep things controlled, buoyant and unaffected by braking. The Evolution-spec damper in the Fox shock felt better than similar setups in other bikes when we were pushing the pace.

Verdict: 3.5/5

Download the Trek Bike Sizing Guide PDF

The right size bike for your body size is essential to ensure the optimum experience, comfort and enjoyment as you ride. With sizing varying between the type of bike, the brand and even the model, getting the perfect fit can seem daunting. That’s why we’ve compiled a handy guide to help you get the correct size.

Measure Your Height

Our handy size charts match your height to the appropriate frame size so you need to be sure you’ve measured your height accurately.

  1. Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
  2. Make sure legs are together and your shoulders are back.
  3. Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
  4. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.

Range of Reach

For most people to get the right frame size, measuring your height will suffice. However, you may find that your height is on the borderline of the range we suggest for a particular frame. If this occurs you need to measure the range of your reach or “Ape Index”. This will ensure you get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and your saddle.

  1. Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
  2. Life your arms out horizontally either side of you.
  3. Measure the distance from fingertip of one hand to fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
  4. Subtract your height from this figure to get your Ape Index.
  5. If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
  6. If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height you need the smaller size.

Stand Over Height

You should also consider your inside leg measurement when choosing your bike to ensure adequate stand over height. Stand over height is the clearance between the top tube and the bottom of your crotch. For mountain bikes we recommend a distance of 2-4 inches and for road or hybrid bikes 1-2 inches of clearance is required. This will ensure comfort when you’re stopped and standing astride the bike.

Our bike sizing charts take stand over height into consideration but if you have a particularly long or short inside leg measurement in relation to your height you will need to bear this in mind when selecting your frame size.

Riding Style

The way you ride and the type of bike you are into will also impact the frame size you should choose. For example, a trail devotee looking for an aggressive ride may prefer a smaller, more manoeuvrable bike size. It all comes down to personal preference and how the bike feels to you.

Our sizing charts aim to be as specific as possible so you can look up the particular type, make and model of bike you’re looking for. Remember, the sizes given in our guides are suggestions and should be used for general advice only. For the best possible fit  we recommend popping in to your local Leisure Lakes Bikes store, or call 0800 083 0888 for expert advice tailored to you.
